Central Square is the historical and symbolic heart of Tampere, located right in the city center and surrounded by landmarks such as the Town Hall, the Tampere Theatre, and the Old Church. The square has served as a central gathering and trading place since the 19th century, and its name, Keskustori, was officially established in the 1930s. To this day, a wide variety of events and activities are held at the square throughout the year.

Central Square is the historical and symbolic core of Tampere, around which the city’s life has been built for centuries. It is located in the heart of the city, surrounded by iconic buildings such as the Town Hall, the Tampere Theatre, and the Old Church. The square has served as a central meeting and trading place since the 19th century, and its name, Keskustori, became official in the 1930s.

Today, Central Square serves as a vibrant stage for events throughout the year. During the Christmas season, the square transforms into a festive Christmas Market filled with charm and tradition. The scent of mulled wine drifts through the air, stalls are stocked with handmade gifts, and Christmas lights illuminate the darkening evenings. A warm and inviting atmosphere fills the city center, culminating in the traditional Christmas Peace Declaration from the Town Hall balcony.

The Tampere Market Vendors Association actively works to organize markets and events at Central Square in cooperation with the City of Tampere. The long-standing Monthly Market is held on the first Monday of each month, taking place either at Central Square or Hämeenpuisto, depending on other events scheduled at the square.

19th Century – The City Center Begins to Take Shape

Central Square was originally known as Kauppatori (“Market Square”) and Kirkkotori (“Church Square”), and over time, it developed into the center of administration, commerce, and public gatherings in Tampere.

1930s – The Name Keskustori Becomes Official

The name Keskustori was officially adopted for the square. At the same time, the importance of the area grew, as iconic buildings such as the Town Hall, Tampere Theatre, and the Old Church were built around it.

1950s–1970s – A Vibrant Urban Space

Central Square served as a stage for many celebrations, political gatherings, and public events. It was the city's “living room,” where people came together to celebrate May Day and other festive occasions.

2000s – The Heart of Events and Atmosphere

Today, Central Square is especially known for its Christmas Market, festivals, and cultural events. It serves year-round as a meeting place for both locals and visitors alike.
